چکیده

For acute respiratory distress or arrest, endotracheal intubation is a life-saving procedure in emergency airway management. There are many possible complications that may present with manipulation of the airway. This case will discuss factors that one may consider when adequate oxygenation or ventilation is not achieved after an endotracheal tube (ETT) is placed. Issues that can lead to difficulty in ventilation should be rapidly identified and reversed if respiratory acidosis, hypoxemia, and respiratory arrest are to be avoided. These include causes of air trapping, such as asthma or foreign body aspiration; ETT obstruction due to biting, tube kinking, or mucus plugging; and external lung compression from pneumothorax, hemothorax, or diaphragm rupture.

Effect of Stabilizing Endotracheal Tube on Quality of Airway Management in Patients Hospitalized in ICU

Background: The unplanned departure of endotracheal tube is one of the main complications for endotracheal intubation. In addition to endotracheal extubation, its movement can also lead to damage to the oral cavity. Stabilizing endotracheal tube is the most important factor that can prevent unplanned departure of endotracheal tube as well as its movement. The current study was done with the aim...

Experience with a new device for clearing mucus from the endotracheal tube.

Partial or total obstruction of an endotracheal tube (ETT) by mucus can cause severe respiratory distress, hypoxemia, or death. Signs of an obstructed ETT include increased ventilation pressure, changes in the ventilator graphics, S(pO(2)) decrease, and cardiovascular changes. We present 3 patients whose ETTs were partially obstructed by mucus. In each case the patient displayed adverse effects...

Safe Use of Flammable Endotracheal Tubes During Anesthesia for Laryngeal Laser Surgery-Report of 1024 Cases and a Brief Literature Review

Introduction: One of the major concerns in laryngeal laser surgery is the risk of airway fire. The introduction ofwrapped tubes and metal tubes has reduced the fire hazards. However, these tubes are expensive and do not provide convenient access to the surgical field. There are few laboratory studies addressing the resistance of polyvinylchloride tubes against ignition in the given circum...

Exchange of orotracheal tubes in a patient with difficult airway and hiatus hernia.

To the Editor: A 23-yr-old man (height approximately 155 cm, weight 38 kg) with acute respiratory failure required exchange of endotracheal tubes. He had spastic cerebral palsy at two months of age, had had spastic quadriplegia, mental retardation, severe scoliosis and repeated regurgitation and pneumonia due to hiatus hernia. The head and neck were fixed in a flexed position and the interincis...

In-line Acoustic System to Position and Monitor Infant-sized Endotracheal Tubes

Ensuring that the distal end of an endotracheal tube is properly located within the trachea, and that the tube is not obstructed by mucous deposition, is a major clinical concern. This concern is heightened in infant care, where the relatively small geometries predicate higher risks. A novel acoustic system was developed to allow for the continuous monitoring of endotracheal tube position and p...
